Goethe B1 writing: 10 sample answers marked
Advice like "make it coherent" or "cover every point" doesn't help much until you see what it looks like in points. Below are ten answers to the three Schreiben B1 tasks: four emails to a friend, three opinions for a guestbook and three formal letters. Some are strong, some are average, and one scores zero. Each is marked against the exam's four criteria, with a grade and the reason for it.

How to read the marking
Every text is marked against four criteria: Erfüllung (task fulfilment), Kohärenz (coherence), Wortschatz (vocabulary) and Strukturen (grammar). On each criterion the examiner gives one of five grades, from A to E, and each grade is a share of the maximum.
| Grade | Share | Aufgaben 1 and 2, per criterion | Aufgabe 3, Erfüllung and Kohärenz | Aufgabe 3, Wortschatz and Strukturen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 100% | 10 | 4 | 6 |
| B | 75% | 7.5 | 3 | 4.5 |
| C | 50% | 5 | 2 | 3 |
| D | 25% | 2.5 | 1 | 1.5 |
| E | 0% | 0 | 0 | 0 |
One rule matters more than the rest: if Erfüllung is graded E, the whole task scores 0, however good the grammar is.
The grades below are our own marking against the official scale, not an examiner's decision. Two examiners can differ by one grade on one criterion, but no more: that's why the criteria are described in such detail.
Aufgabe 1: an email to a friend
The task for all four samples:
Sie haben letzte Woche einen Kochkurs gemacht. Ihr Freund Jonas konnte nicht mitkommen.
Schreiben Sie Jonas eine E-Mail (circa 80 Wörter):
– Beschreiben Sie: Wie war der Kurs?
– Begründen Sie: Was hat Ihnen am besten gefallen und warum?
– Machen Sie einen Vorschlag für ein Treffen.
Sample 1: 37.5 out of 40
Lieber Jonas,
Was meinst du?
Viele Grüße
Olga
- Erfüllung — A (10). All three points are covered, each with its own content: what they cooked, what the writer liked and why, and a concrete suggestion with a day.
- Kohärenz — A (10). "zuerst … dann … zum Schluss", "Dann koche ich …" — the text leads the reader rather than listing things.
- Wortschatz — B (7.5). The words are precise but simple: apart from "geduldig", there's little beyond the basics.
- Strukturen — A (10). Perfekt, clauses with "dass" and "weil", inversion after "Dann" — all without a mistake.
Sample 2: 22.5 out of 40
Hallo Jonas,
wie geht es dir? Mir geht es gut. Letzte Woche ich war im Kochkurs. Der Kurs war sehr gut. Wir haben Suppe und Nudeln gekocht. Der Kurs war sehr interessant. Die Nudeln war am besten, weil sie war lecker. Der Lehrer war sehr nett. Wir können zusammen kochen. Am Samstag ist gut für mich.
Bis bald
Olga
- Erfüllung — B (7.5). All three points are there on paper, but each gets half a sentence. "Weil sie lecker waren" is a reason, but a minimal one.
- Kohärenz — C (5). Ten short sentences in a row, held together by a single "weil". The first two have nothing to do with the task.
- Wortschatz — C (5). "sehr gut", "sehr interessant", "sehr nett" — the same construction three times.
- Strukturen — C (5). "Letzte Woche ich war" instead of "Letzte Woche war ich", "Die Nudeln war" instead of "waren", "weil sie war lecker" instead of "weil sie lecker waren". It's understandable, but the mistakes are in basic word order.
This text hasn't failed: 22.5 out of 40 is more than half. But almost every lost point comes from the same habit — short sentences built in the word order of the writer's first language, with German words dropped in.
Sample 3: 30 out of 40
Lieber Jonas,
Olga
- Erfüllung — C (5). There's no suggestion to meet. "Ich möchte noch einen Kurs machen" is about the writer, not an invitation to Jonas. One of the three points is missing.
- Kohärenz — A (10). A logical account that moves from the place to the details, with "denn" and "Leider".
- Wortschatz — B (7.5). "Teig", "auf jeden Fall", "echte Pizza" — good for B1.
- Strukturen — B (7.5). Everything is correct, but it's almost all main clauses; the indirect question "wie man …" is the only complex construction.
Compare it with sample 2: the grammar here is far better, yet the gap is only 7.5 points. A missing point in the task costs more than a dozen word-order mistakes.
Sample 4: 0 out of 40
Lieber Jonas,
ich habe eine gute Idee: Nächsten Monat gibt es in der Volkshochschule einen Kochkurs für Anfänger. Der Kurs ist jeden Dienstag um 18 Uhr und kostet nur 40 Euro. Wir können dort zusammen thailändisch kochen lernen. Ich koche sehr gern, aber allein macht es keinen Spaß. Bitte sag mir bis Freitag, ob du mitkommst, dann melde ich uns beide an.
Viele Grüße
Olga
- Erfüllung — E (0). It's a good text, but about something else: an invitation to a future course instead of the one that already happened. Neither "wie war der Kurs" nor "was hat gefallen" is anywhere in it.
- Kohärenz, Wortschatz, Strukturen — irrelevant. With an E for task fulfilment, the whole task scores zero.
This is the most expensive mistake on the exam, and strong candidates make it: they read "Kochkurs" and "Vorschlag" and write about whatever is easier. Before you start writing, underline the three verbs in the task: beschreiben, begründen, vorschlagen.
Aufgabe 2: an opinion for a guestbook
The task for all three samples:
Sie haben im Fernsehen eine Diskussionssendung zum Thema „Sollen Geschäfte auch am Sonntag öffnen?“ gesehen. Im Online-Gästebuch der Sendung finden Sie folgende Meinung:
Petra: Ich arbeite im Supermarkt. Wenn die Geschäfte am Sonntag öffnen, habe ich keinen freien Tag mehr mit meiner Familie. Ich bin dagegen.
Schreiben Sie nun Ihre Meinung (circa 80 Wörter).
Sample 5: 40 out of 40
- Erfüllung — A (10). An opinion of the writer's own, a reason, an example from real life and a response to Petra's view — everything is there, and the topic hasn't drifted.
- Kohärenz — A (10). "Trotzdem", "zum Beispiel", "Aber" — you can see where the concession is, where the position is and where the caveat is.
- Wortschatz — A (10). "Schichtdienst", "unter der Woche", "der einzige Tag" — precise words, not one wasted "sehr".
- Strukturen — A (10). A relative clause with "an dem …", "wäre", modal verbs in a subordinate clause — varied and error-free.
You don't need difficult words for 40 out of 40. You need every sentence to do its own job.
Sample 6: 25 out of 40
Hallo Petra, du hast recht! Ich bin auch dagegen. Am Sonntag müssen die Geschäfte zu sein. Die Leute brauchen Ruhe und die Familie ist wichtig. Ich finde deine Meinung sehr gut und ich denke genauso wie du. Man kann auch am Samstag einkaufen, das ist kein Problem.
Viele Grüße
Olga
- Erfüllung — C (5). There is an opinion, but the argument is borrowed from Petra, with no example of the writer's own. It's also a chat reply rather than a guestbook entry: the task asks for an opinion on the topic, not a message to one person.
- Kohärenz — B (7.5). Easy to read, but it runs on "und".
- Wortschatz — C (5). "sehr gut", "wichtig", "kein Problem" — generic words.
- Strukturen — B (7.5). "zu sein" instead of "geschlossen sein" is a mistake; the rest is correct but monotonous.
Sample 7: 20 out of 40
Ich denke, Geschäfte am Sonntag ist gut. Weil viele Menschen arbeiten in der Woche und haben keine Zeit. In meine Heimat alle Geschäfte sind am Sonntag offen und das ist sehr bequem. Ich kaufe dort immer am Sonntag Essen fur die ganze Woche. Aber für Verkäufer ist schwer.
- Erfüllung — B (7.5). An opinion, a reason, an example from experience and a concession — all there, but brief: about 50 words.
- Kohärenz — C (5). "Weil …" as a sentence of its own, cut off from the main clause, is a fragment, not a link.
- Wortschatz — C (5). Enough to get the meaning across, and no more.
- Strukturen — D (2.5). A mistake in almost every sentence: "Geschäfte … ist", the verb not at the end after "weil", "in meine Heimat" instead of "in meiner Heimat", "alle Geschäfte sind" instead of "sind alle Geschäfte", "fur" instead of "für", and the missing "es" in "für Verkäufer ist es schwer".
The content here is better than in sample 6, and the score is lower. The difference is grammar, and almost every one of these mistakes is a classic for English speakers too: the verb kept in place after "weil", the verb not in second position, "in" without the dative, the missing "es". They're all in the article on fifteen mistakes English speakers make.

Aufgabe 3: a formal letter
The task for all three samples. The maximum here is 20 points: 4 each for Erfüllung and Kohärenz, 6 each for Wortschatz and Strukturen.
Ihre Kursleiterin, Frau Keller, hat Sie am Freitag zu einem Gespräch über Ihre Prüfung eingeladen. Sie können aber nicht kommen.
Schreiben Sie an Frau Keller. Entschuldigen Sie sich höflich und berichten Sie, warum Sie nicht kommen können (circa 40 Wörter).
Sample 8: 20 out of 20
Sehr geehrte Frau Keller,
vielen Dank für Ihre Einladung. Leider kann ich am Freitag nicht zu unserem Gespräch kommen, weil mein Sohn krank ist und ich bei ihm zu Hause bleiben muss. Es tut mir sehr leid. Ich hoffe auf Ihr Verständnis.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Anna Petrova
- Erfüllung — A (4). An apology and a reason, "Sie" and "Ihr" throughout, greeting and signature by the book.
- Kohärenz — A (4). Thanks, refusal, reason, apology — in a natural order.
- Wortschatz — A (6). "Einladung", "Verständnis", "Es tut mir leid" — exactly the register required.
- Strukturen — A (6). A subordinate clause with two verbs at the end: "… krank ist und ich … bleiben muss".
Sample 9: 15.5 out of 20
Sehr geehrte Frau Keller,
leider kann ich am Freitag nicht kommen. Ich habe einen Termin beim Zahnarzt, den ich nicht verschieben kann. Entschuldigung! Kannst du mir bitte sagen, wann du nächste Woche Zeit hast?
Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Anna
- Erfüllung — C (2). The apology and the reason are there, but in the middle of a formal letter come "Kannst du" and "wann du Zeit hast". The register breaks, and register is part of task fulfilment. The signature has no surname.
- Kohärenz — B (3). "Entschuldigung!" as a standalone exclamation sounds curt rather than polite.
- Wortschatz — B (4.5). "Termin" and "verschieben" are good, but it's "Entschuldigung!" instead of "Es tut mir leid".
- Strukturen — A (6). The relative clause "den ich nicht verschieben kann" — the grammar is all correct.
The grammar here earns full marks, and the letter still loses four and a half points out of twenty over two little words: "du".
Sample 10: 0 out of 20
Hallo Frau Keller,
sorry, Freitag klappt bei mir leider nicht, ich muss arbeiten. Wir sehen uns dann im Kurs!
Liebe Grüße
Anna
- Erfüllung — E (0). The whole letter is in a casual tone: "Hallo", "sorry", "klappt", "Liebe Grüße". That's how you'd write to a colleague, not to your teacher. There's no real apology at all.
- The other criteria don't count: with an E for task fulfilment, the whole task scores zero.
Twenty words, not a single grammar mistake — and zero points. How to write this task by the rules is covered in the article on the formal letter.
What the high-scoring texts have in common
- Every point of the task gets its own sentence, ideally two. Leaving out one point drops Erfüllung by two grades at once.
- An example from your own life. Samples 1, 5 and 8 have specifics: twelve people, Schichtdienst, a sick son. The examiner can see the text was written for this task, not memorised.
- Three or four different linking words. "zuerst … dann", "trotzdem", "zum Beispiel", "weil". You don't need ten — you need them to be different.
- The same register from the first word to the last. "du" to a friend, "Sie" to a teacher, and no exceptions.
- One complex construction instead of five risky ones. A relative clause or a "wäre" is enough to show your level.
The easiest way to see your own texts the way you've just seen these is against the same four criteria, with a grade for each. In doch! you can write an answer to a Schreiben task and within seconds get your score, corrections in the text, and what to fix first.
Frequently asked questions
How many points do you need to pass Schreiben?
60 out of 100 for the whole module. The three tasks are worth 40, 40 and 20 points, and they add up. You could score 20 on the first, 30 on the second and 10 on the third — exactly 60.
How are the criteria graded?
Each of the four criteria gets one of five grades, from A to E. A is 100% of the criterion's maximum, B is 75%, C is 50%, D is 25%, and E is zero. In the first and second tasks, each criterion is worth up to 10 points; in the third, task fulfilment and coherence are worth up to 4, and vocabulary and grammar up to 6.
Is it true that one mistake can get you zero?
Not a mistake — an unfulfilled task. If Erfüllung is graded E, because the text is off-topic or entirely in the wrong register, the whole task scores 0. Grammar mistakes don't wipe out a task like that.
Can you get 40 out of 40?
Yes. You don't need C1 German for it: you need a text that covers every point, links its sentences, avoids repetition and has no mistakes in basic grammar. Sample 5 above is one.
Are the words counted exactly?
No. "Circa 80 Wörter" is a guideline. A text of 70 or 95 words doesn't lose points for its length, but a text of 45 words usually can't cover every point.
